Using the Nucan patented valve system, this petrol can is set to become one of the most important safety designs of the recent age.
A radical new design for a total control fuel can has its inventor Paul Bone ‘dancing in the streets’ after recently scooping first prize in ‘Innovention 2005’ – one of the UK’s top awards recognising significant new inventions.
Inventor Paul, says his new design fuel can has a number of very important features of major benefit to the user, their personal safety and the environment. The can has a unique total control flow system that allows the operator to dispense the fuel as required ‘at the touch of a button’ and without spillage, dispensing 5 litres of fuel in just 12 seconds, very important if you have the misfortune to need to re fuel at the side of a busy motorway!.
Paul, who has now secured his fourth major Inventors Award, commented, “As a keen gardener I realised how difficult it was to fill my lawnmower and strimmer without spilling. My wife also complained of the resultant brown patches on the lawn. The fuel can represents two years research and development to provide the safest and most environmentally aware model”.
His dedication to those principles and targets has developed a striking new product that many people will want across a whole range of applications and sectors
The judges at ‘Innovention 2005 were certainly impressed by Paul and his new fuel can which –
* CAN - provide total control and increased safety – at the touch of a button
* CAN – dispense 5 litres of fuel in just 12 seconds if required (against some 85 seconds for the basic competitive models)
* CAN prevent spillage – the safety system ensures no spillage during filling or operation even if the can is dropped or knocked over.
* CAN – make a significant contribution to reducing emissions through fumes and spillage
* CAN – work in many situations – marine, automotive, leisure, off road, tool hire, garden machinery and many more.
Now living by the sea on the Isle of Wight, Paul was also keen to design something that reduced spillage into the water during small boat refueling and because the can will dispense a full 5 litres of fuel in an amazing 12 seconds it also has major advantages in emergency roadside breakdown situations.
‘It is illegal to spill fuel into the water, whether on the sea, canal or lake. Equally, no-one likes to run out of fuel on dry land, especially on a motorway, said Paul. But with one of the UK’s premier roadside assistance agencies reporting a staggering 47,000 callouts last year for fuel incidents alone, I believe my can will play a role in preventing spillage as well as speeding up refueling, which has to be good for all users, especially the safety of the motorist, the emergency services operator and other road users”.
Paul will be launching his new fuel can in September of this year at the GLEE Garden & Leisure exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham under the brand name NuCan and has already had considerable interest from potential customers and distributors.
‘Everyone we have shown the can to has been impressed and wants one and that includes some key organisations in the USA and Europe. Paul has met with representatives from Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Tennessee, USA and they believe his design could change legislation and have a global impact on emissions and the way fuel is stored and dispensed’
‘As an inventor you are used to the merry go around of ‘getting your product to market’ and my worst fear is that this might be another of those innovative British ideas that fails to get recognition at home and has to rely on overseas vision to get manufactured and be successful’.
Paul is now looking to get the designs finalised, the final prototype made up (part of his ‘Innovention 2005’ Award will cover this) and a major manufacturer lined up to get his can to market, he is already in discussions with a German company and one in the USA, and he like many others believe there is a major worldwide market for a fuel can with this many benefits.
Paul and his wife Dawn have funded the project development to date, including world patents, and Paul has recently held talks with several organisations, including disaster aid agencies with a view to adapting his designs for water and other materials.
As a seasoned and successful inventor Paul has no doubts about the potential of his new design. He knows however tough the challenge, his fuel can will meet it!

Notes to the Editor
USP’s of the Controllable Fuel Can
1. Push button flow control – gentle trickle through to full flow control – if required dispenses 5 litres in just 12 seconds – ideal on land and sea. The control unit also acts as a ‘dead mans handle’ avoiding spillage if can is kicked over at any time.
2. Flexible, clear, non detachable hose - easy fill for any size appliance/awkwardly placed fuel tank
3. Handle colour denotes fuel - Unleaded/Diesel/Leaded etc
4. 5 litre unleaded unit available - unique design ensures anti-spill/no over-fill design
5, Strong construction - stable, ergonomic. High quality components
6. Health & Safety - better, safer to use, reduces spillage/contamination risk for users and the environment – ideal for professional or domestic user alike
7. Very low emissions - exceeds all known legal & emission requirements (setting new standards)
8. Multi fuel/multi sector use - ideal for a wide range of applications and uses
